A two-day spiritual tour to Holy Mount Athos, during which we will be able to get acquainted with the centuries-old history of a unique monastic republic that has existed for over a thousand years, to touch its ancient shrines and rich cultural and historical heritage. Also, to immerse in the atmosphere of the daily life of monks, visiting worship and sharing meal together with the brethren.

Itineraries

DAY 1

OURANOUPOLI –MONASTERY OF ST. PANTELEIMON – KARIES – KOUTLOUMOUSIOU MONASTERY – IVIRON MONASTERY – MONASTERY OF MEGISTI LAVRA

Meeting point: Ouranoupoli. You will first stop at the pilgrim’s office to get the entry permit for Mt. Athos.
The first stop of the tour is the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, dedicated to St. Panteleimon the Healer. Since 1835, it has been inhabited by Russian monks and it is home to the important icon of Panagia Hodegetria. Following is a visit to the famous capital of the Monastic State of Mount Athos, Karies, which is the seat of the administration of Mount Athos. Also in Karies is the major church of Protaton, one of the oldest in the Holy Mountain and the president of the monastic community. Inside the church there is the renowned icon of “Axion Esti”, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
Another important stop of our tour is the Koutloumousiou Monastery, home to the icon of Panagia Fovera Prostasias, part of the Holy Wood as well as parts of the holy relics of Saint Anne and Saint Gregory the Theologian. As we head to the north-eastern side of the Holy peninsula, we will pay a visit to the Iviron Monastery and see the icon of Panagia Portaitissa, before the final stop of the day, at the Monastery of Megisti Lavra. It is the oldest and second largest monastery in the area, established by St. Athanasius the Athonite, whose relics are preserved in its sacristy. The day ends with vesper in the Monastery and dinner at the Refectory. Overnight Stay.

DAY 2

SKETE OF TIMIOS PRODROMOS – MONASTERY OF PHILOTHEOS – MONASTERY OF KARAKALLOS – MONASTERY OF ST. PAUL – OURANOUPOLI

Prior to departure there is Holy Liturgy in the Monastery of Megisti Lavra and breakfast in the Refectory.
First on the itinerary is the Skete of Timios Prodromos, a cenobetic Romanian skete, in a remote area called Vigla and then we will also visit the Monastery of Philotheos and the Monastery of Karakallos, which is home to the parchment of the Holy Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The last part of the tour is the Monastery of St. Paul, at the foot of Mount Athos, where there is the famous icon of Panagia Kathrefti. Finally, we will return to Ouranoupoli.
