We have created a multiday tour just for you that will remain unforgettable. We visit regions of Greece which are distinguished for their rich religious heritage, as that of Meteora. We take a tour of wonderful vineyards, underground cellars and we taste fine wine labels, with an emphasis on local varieties cultivated in our country.

Local gastronomy is of course another prominent feature of our trip. We get in touch with nature, taking a break from the fast and demanding pace of everyday life. Finally, we get a taste of the exceptional cuisine of Thessaly, which is famous for the fine products used in their creation.

Itineraries

1st day – Lake Plastiras

Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti in Karditsa

13:30- 14:30

13:30- 14:30 We visit the Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti in Karditsa, a stunning monastery that is almost hovering over the gap, at a 1400-meter altitude. It is a monastery which was founded at the end of the 15th century and it is composed of two temples, an abbey, cells and a refectory whose exterior facet resembles a fortress. The interior of the monastery is decorated with impressive murals, with strict figures and vivid colors, while especially remarkable is its altarpiece sculpted in wood.

A trip to Lake Plastiras

15:15 – 16:15

We go on a tour around the beautiful Lake Plastiras, taking a course all the way to the dam. It is an elegant arrow, an impressive cement construction while also being an ideal place to gaze at the view of the lake. Going a little lower to Moucha position, we get to admire the fjord of the lake and the small Niaga island right across.

Following is a meal in a cozy space with a fireplace, where we enjoy fresh homemade bread, baked in the restaurant’s wood stove and we taste crispy traditional pies made with savory cheeses. Also, among our choices there are traditionally prepared first-rate casseroles, dishes with meat cooked on the grill, as well as delicious chickpeas, with velvety texture and a lasting aftertaste. Of course, exquisite wine could not be absent from our table, so the oenophiles in our group have the opportunity to select the wine they desire to accompany their meal.

2nd day Trikala – Pili – Pertouli

Holy Monastery of Saint Vissarion (Pili Trikala)

11:30- 12:15

We visit the Holy Monastery of Saint Vissarion (Pili Trikala), also known as Monastery of ‘Sotiros ton Megalon Pilon’. It is a monastery which was founded during the 15th-16t h century and it is dedicated to Christ. Ample information will be provided by our guide, regarding the owner of the Monastery, his work and his remarkable life.

The next stop in our wonderful tour is the Palaiokarya Waterfall

13:00- 13:30

We enjoy taking in the scenery, with an elaborate and majestic bridge with two artificial waterfalls, whose construction dates back to the 16th century. The waterfall located behind the bridge is 12 meters high and the way it was constructed, combined with the natural environment which surrounds it, is truly awe-inspiring for every visitor. We get to learn about the role it used to play and about the flora and fauna of the wider area as well as enjoy the captivating beauty of the natural surroundings

Lunch at stunning Pertouli

14:15 - 16:15

From the big glass window, we gaze out to the amazing scenery of Pertouli while our table is served with boar with plums, roe cooked in tomato sauce with raisins and deer with dried fruit. A wide range of delicious meals, just ready to be enjoyed. Homemade ekmek is the ideal finishing touch to our meal next to the fireplace while we savor labels of exceptional local wines.

3rd day – Meteora

10:00 Departure for the hotel – Trikala

Great Meteoro

11:15- 12:30

We start our day with a visit to Great Meteoro, as it has come to be called. It is the oldest and most significant monastery of the area. Our guide leads us to its interior and informs us about the founder of the monastery and his exceptional work. Next, we will have the opportunity to admire the historically significant monastery of Saint Athanasius, which is a small structure located inside the rock. Also, we will receive interesting information about the most extensive monastery library that exists in Great Meteoro. It is a library in which, despite the adverse historical circumstances, the monks managed to salvage and protect rare documents, unique publications, handwritten codes, each of which compose the identity of a rare cultural treasure.

The next stop in our religious tour is Varlaam Monastery

12:40- 13:55

Opposite the Great Meteoro rock, there is an equally majestic rock of shorter length, on top of which the Varlaam Monastery was established by Athanasius the Meteorite’s contemporary, hermit Varlaam. We get a close look both at this sublime catholic and at the rich and notable collection of manuscripts that it holds. We take a tour of the museum of the Holy Monastery and we view a great range of illustrated manuscripts and religious heirlooms. Finally, our experienced and highly knowledgeable guide, introduces us to an abundance of monuments which surround this monastery, providing us with a multitude of interesting facts about them.

Wine tasting at the foot of the enchanting Meteora- Kalampaka

14:30 – 16:00

Upon arrival, we are going to enjoy a wonderful walk around the verdant vineyards, we are going to be informed about the varieties cultivated, the terroir, the climate conditions of the region and how those contribute to the creation of select wines. Taking in the beautiful imagery of the scenery, we leave the vineyards behind and enter the interior of the winery, where we are going to learn everything about the stages of production, vinification and storage of wine. This process is a reflection of the zeal producer possesses as well as of an entire year’s worth of effort.

Later, we are going to visit the cellar, in which the space conditions, the dim lightning and the lack of noise, allow for the wines to develop, to age and to acquire the most prominent of their scents, until they are ready for consumption. Of course, we get to taste them! Our winetasting is accompanied by exceptional traditional local products which are famous for their quality and great taste.

Monastery of Saint Stephan in Meteora

10:30- 11:45

We visit the Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Meteora, a monastery towering on the top of a majestic rock. The view we will behold from the monastery will definitely reward us for the effort we will put into reaching it. In the south, at the foot of the monastery, the city of Kalampaka stretches, with Pineios river and the massifs of Koziaka and of Pindus in the background. During our course, we will have the opportunity to see the chappel of Saint John the Prodrome; an exquisite small, cyclical church, carved into stone.

Exploring the Museum of Natural History of Meteora and Mushroom Museum in Kalampaka

13:45- 15:00

Firstly, we become acquainted with a rich private collection of birds and mammals, a noteworthy effort to collect representative samples of wild fauna from all over the world. Among them, three bird species that have become extinct but also 17 animal exhibits dated back to 180 years ago during the Victorian era. We then explore and learn about the fascinating world of mushrooms. Our guide informs us about the wide variety of mushrooms we can see inside the museum. The collection of exhibits we will get the chance to admire consists of mushroom sculptures that are very realistic. We will enjoy a presentation of those based on the ecosystem in which each species grows.

Lunch in the city of Trikala

A look around the city of Trikala

17:45- 19:15

We begin our walk from the majestic Fortress with the Tower and its clock. Ascending the clock’s Tower, we admire the view of the whole city of Trikala from above. During our course, we enjoy the view of the picturesque Lithaios river, which crosses the city and of the many bridges that connect its banks. Towering planetrees, wild chestnut trees and many others, are some of the imagery we encounter during our course. We conclude our tour with a visit to Kursum Mosque. Our willing guide narrates to us the memorable history of this representative sample of eastern architecture.

A mushroom experience that will be unforgettable! (Grevena)

11:30 - 13:00

Just before the conclusion of our multiday tour, we are going to visit a workshop which produces mushroom products. We attend a highly interesting seminar which introduces us to the basic kinds of mushrooms which grow in Greece and we get a taste of a wide variety.
